Starting in 2017 leading into 2018 women are charging into the political arena. Some are saying it is due to the election of our latest president, while more and more women are starting to believe they can improve their communities through politics.
Felicia Bullock is one of those women. She is the only black woman running for State Representative of the 5th District in Illinois. She has been hitting the streets to ensure she can address the issues that are most important to her constituents. When I asked Mrs. Bullock about her experience as a female in politics, she said:
So far it’s been amazing. We are in a very progressive climate for women right now and it feels great to be a part of that. However, it was interesting to see that of all the candidates who filed in the 5th district, only the women were challenged. That quickly reminded me that we have much further to go. We have to fight for a seat at the table, it will not be handed to us.
We are excited to see more women and minorities fighting for a chance to level the political playing field. Candidate Bullock understands the importance of representation:
We have to make our voices heard and ensure that our communities are fairly represented. The only way to do that is to have our people fighting for us on all levels of policy making.
How can we create more jobs, repair the broken public school system and improve safety? How can we ensure progression occurs in our communities?
There are several ways to achieve these goals, you can become an elected official, partner with existing organizations or volunteer your time to become the change you want see. You can also support local hopefuls that represent you, to ensure your concerns are addressed.
