Meet the Woman We May One Day be Thanking for the Cure to Cancer

Cancer has taken the lives of so many of our loved ones. The National Cancer Institute estimates nearly 1.7 million new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in the United States every year. With no real cure for cancer, patients are limited on how they can fight the disease. Morehouse professor, Dr. Hadiyah-Nicole Green is developing a new laser treatment with little to no side effects to help patients beat the disease.

Dr. Green’s passion to cure cancer came from personal experience. Her aunt was diagnosed with cancer and chose not to go through chemotherapy and radiation because of all of the horrible side effects she would endure. Dr. Green took care of her aunt for the last 3 months of her life and shortly after was faced with same challenge, her uncle was diagnosed with cancer. Her uncle decided to go through chemo and radiation and with the treatment and the help of Dr. Green lived another 10 years. Now Dr. Green has witnessed the effects of chemo and radiation and how negatively it affected her uncle as well as how the disease affected her aunt and knew there had to be “a better way.”

With all the advanced technology we have, it does seem absurd that we have not found a cure for this debilitating disease. Dr. Green believes, “If there was something that I was born to do maybe this was it and if other people were going to do it, it would have been done already.”

With a several grants, in pursuit of her Ph. D., Green began her research at the Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. She studied there for 5 years and developed groundbreaking results that we believe will one day cure cancer. Along with curing cancer the treatment will enhance the time of therapy while reducing the side effects and cost.

Dr. Green received a million dollar grant from the VA. She will receive $200,000 per year for 5 years to research head and neck cancer and compare her laser procedure to chemotherapy and radiation results. The $1.1 million is just the beginning, after some research Dr. Green discovered she will need $31 million to continue her research and eventually make the cure available for public consumption. The donate to her cause you can visit the Morehouse School Medicine website, msm.edu, and donate to Dr. Green’s research. She also has her own website where donations can be made, www.physics2cancer.org.
